WHYMSICAL WISH, LONG ISLAND BAHAMAS
AN INSIDER’S GUIDE TO LONG ISLAND:
WHAT TO DO, WHERE TO GO TO SEE SOME NEAT BEACHES AND OTHER SIGHTS, WHERE TO GO FOR LUNCH AND DINNER, AND OTHER STUFF I WOULD TELL MY FRIENDS ABOUT THE ISLAND
FIRST, FOR A DETAILED MAP OF THE ISLAND AND A LISTING OF ALL OF THE BEACHES ON THE ISLAND, VISIT "THE BEACHES OF LONG ISLAND" SITE AT https://www.thebeachesoflongisland.com/index.html
Feel free to contact us directly with any questions you might have !
Introduction
I have lived on Long Island for a number of years and my wife is a native Long Islander. We get many visitors from all over the world who visit and stay with us. Naturally, they are curious about the island and want to see as much of it as possible and try to get the true “island feel” before they leave. After countless sessions with all of these visitors pointing out the “must see” spots on the island, we have decided to put it all down in writing so it will be readily handy for all visitors to the island.
So sit back and relax and let me tell you just about everything on Long Island......and what I forget now we'll discuss over a Rum & Coke on the veranda once ya get here !!
Getting Here
The key to making it to the island in one day is to book a flight arriving in Nassau that will arrive around noon.....this will allow you plenty of time to make a connection to the island with either Southern Air or Bahamas Air...they leave around 1:30 to 2:00 PM every day (CHECK WITH CURRENT SCHEDULES TO SEE IF THIS IS STILL THE CASE )….another option is to see if Stella Maris Air has a seat available. This is a smaller charter operation serving the Stella Maris resort and they sell seats when available. They are a bit more expensive than the other airlines but they will wait for you if your flight arrives a little later in the day. I fly with them all the time and prefer taking it when available. Let us know if you are interested in booking with them and we can check availability for the day you are flying to Nassau/Long Island. Getting back is no problem as Southern air has an early 9:00 AM flight back to Nassau from Long Island every day. (AGAIN, CHECK THEIR CURRENT SCHEDULE)
UPDATE ON A DIRECT FLIGHT OPERATOR !!!! Makers Air is now offering round trip flights from Fort Lauderdale …..here is there website: https://makersair.com/ 1 They charge about $1000 per person round trip and fly on Thursdays and Sundays to Long Island. Fly into Fort Luaderdale International airport and take a short cab/uber ride over to the Executive airport where Makers Air is located. Very easy. I
CAUTION: THE LOCAL AIRLINES ARE KNOWN TO FREQUENTLY CHANGE THEIR ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE TIMES, AS WELL AS THEIR GATES,WITHOUT NOTICE…SO YOU MUST ALWAYS CHECK WHEN AND WHERE YOUR FLIGHT IS ARRIVING OR DEPARTING AND KEEP CHECKING !!! I’VE SEEN FLIGHT TIMES AND GATES CHANGE MANY TIMES IN THE SAME DAY….THEY MAY TELL YOU THE FLIGHT IS LEAVING AT 4 PM AND THEN CHANGE IT TO 2:30…SO THE BEST THING TO DO IS STAY AT YOUR GATE AND CONSTANTLY MONITOR YOUR FLIGHT UNTIL YOU GET ONTO THE PLANE ! DON;T LEAVE THE GATE AREA ASSUMING YOU HAVE TIME UNTIL YOUR FLIGHT DEPARTS….THEY MAY LEAVE EARLY ! IT HAPPENS ALL THE TIME AND YOU WILL MISS YOUR FLIGHT AND HAVE NO RECOURSE FROM THE AIRLINE.
Here’s how to check and book with Stella Maris Air:
1. Email them at stellamarisresortairservice@gmail.com with the following information: flights dates, number of persons in your party, and your flight arrival and departure info (if you have already booked those). You will get the following message:
When flight dates are confirmed by us we kindly need the following information from you in order to confirm the flight: our flight form filled out with all the necessary information and returned to us (we email you a blank copy of this), a copy of your full flight itineraries (e-tickets) for all traveling passengers in order to waive the 10%% VAT charge on the flights if you have a 48hr international connecting flight, your credit card information (full number and expiration date) to either take the full payment or put on file if you wish to pay with cash upon arrival, and info on where you will be staying while in the Bahamas in case we need to get in contact with you.
Once we have all the necessary information you are all set!
When you do arrive in Nassau you will first go through Immigration....now there are a lot of lines available to check into the country but most days they are long....HOWEVER, people do not know that the two lines all the way to the left are designated for “RETURNING RESIDENTS AND CONNECTING FLIGHTS”....that's YOU ! So go to the lines all the way to the left and tell the immigration officer that you are traveling to Long Island and you will bypass the longer lines !
It’s Better in the Bahamas…especially on Long Island !
First of all, Long Island is LONG!!!!! This is NOT an island that you will walk from one end to the other. Traveling on the road it’s about 90 miles long with the settlement of Grays in the middle, Gordon’s in the south and Seymours in the north.
The island is made of limestone and is not considered “lush” with tropical plants like Hawaii or Jamaica. But what it lacks in tropical foliage, it more than makes up with in an abundance of absolutely spectacular deserted beaches, crystal clear water in all colors of the rainbow and some of the nicest people you would ever meet. “Long Islanders” are an independent bunch…descendants of English Loyalists who settled the islands after the American Revolution….original entrepreneurs who had to scratch a living from this far flung outpost after the Loyalists abandoned their failed plantations here in the early 1800’s. You still see this independent spirit today in the 3000 inhabitants and they appreciate the tourists who come here. Most of them want to make sure that you leave with a good impression of “their island” and will bend over backwards to make that happen. I tell people if they are lost or have a question, simply stop and ask anyone along the road and they will surely take the time to help you. It’s a different place here..a place that is a step back in time, off the path of the hustle and bustle we live in every day, and this is what makes the Long Island experience something you will remember and marvel at for years to come.
OK, let’s get going! First, let me explain directions here on Long Island.
There is NO EAST OR WEST ON THE ISLAND! The “East” side of the island is called the NORTH SIDE; and the “West” side of the island is called the SOUTH SIDE. Don’t question this…just accept it! Islanders go UP SOUTH and DOWN NORTH. This derives from the sailing days when sailboats had to sail into the prevailing south easterly breezes if they were heading south. So, since they were sailing UPWIND, they said they were going UP SOUTH. Conversely, if they wanted to sail somewhere NORTH they would be sailing with the winds at their backs or DOWNWIND…hence, they would go DOWN NORTH.
WHAT TO BRING WITH YOU
You can travel relatively light to the island. We supply towels and beach towels so you won't need those. As for clothing, you will mostly be in a swimsuit and/or shorts, along with a t-shirt or other top, during the days, so plan on as many of these as you think you will need. NOTE: WE DO HAVE A WASHER AND DRYER AVAILABLE IN THE COTTAGES.
If you go out to a restaurant at night, decent shorts and a shirt is all you will need...nothing fancy unless you go for dinner to one of the resort restaurants and then better shorts or pants along with a nice shirt will make you feel at home there. Sneakers and sandals are fine day or night. Bring your toiletries including shampoo.....we have bar soap in the cottages for you. Also make sure to bring sunscreen...."this sun don't play" as they say down here so get some good stuff so you can be out in it and not get a sunburn....after tanning lotion might be a good idea also.
Definitely bring a good swim mask that fits you properly, along with a snorkel. You really don't need swim fins unless you plan on doing some serious free diving (and if you are one of these people you probably already know what you need to bring). A mask and snorkel won't really take up much space in the luggage. I have some masks and snorkels and fins that you are more than welcome to use but I have found most people prefer to have their own so they have something that fits properly. You can snorkel all over this island right from most of the beaches and you will want to be equipped for this so you don’t miss seeing what's under the water. We even have a small patch of coral 180' from our beach where you can see hundreds of different fish (and it's in shallow water so it's great for beginning snorkelers or kids before they tackle some deeper snorkeling). You can buy masks and snorkels on the island but the selection is limited and they are pricier. Nobody really rents them on the island.
WATER SHOES are really a MUST on the island. Get a good pair of water shoes so you can enjoy walking in the water without being bothered by a rocky bottom or rocky shoreline which you will encounter here and there.
SNEAKERS AND FLIP FLOPS(SANDALS).....bring a decent pair of each for walking whether it's up and down any of beaches, off to the grocery store or restaurant or anywhere else. You will either be wearing your sneakers or your sandals all the time so make sure they are comfy. Water shoes>>>did I mention that already? Get some...it'll pay off !
OTHER ITEMS: Sunglasses and hats are a must also for the sun. Get some good shades ! Light jacket (like a windbreaker, no heavier!)....it can get into the 60's at night during the winter (jan and feb.) and also, after being in the sun all day, even though the nights are warm the rest of the year, the air may feel chilly to you. So, throw a light jacket into your luggage.
BUGS: Your stay here might be absolutely BUG FREE depending on how much rain we've had, the winds and a lot of other factors. HOWEVER, I tell people to prepare for two possible bugs they might encounter: Mosquitos and Noseeums....Both are most prevalent at DUSK and DAWN but they may be out other hours depending on conditions. The best defense is bug spray like OFF! or another that contains Picaridin instead of DEET. THIS REALLY SEEMS TO WORK. Baby oil is said to be a good defense also but personally I advise the Picaridin. You can’t get that here so bring your own. These two bugs are not just on Long Island alone, but are seen all over the Bahamas (and the entire Caribbean, Jamaica, Mexico and other areas) so, no matter where you are going in the Tropics, be prepared. The Noseeum is a little bug that is so tiny it's hard to see and if there is no breeze they can be plentiful. Some people can be more aggravated to these bugs and Benadryl seems to provide some relief from the itching for those affected. l As I said above, dusk and dawn are the real trouble times of the day as the breeze tends to lay down allowing these little critters to become pests...but don't over-worry about it !
RENTAL CARS
You do need a rental vehicle to get around the island. Be it going to the grocery store or driving to beaches, you will need a vehicle. If you only want to stay on the main road a normal car will be fine and they range from $65 TO $90 per day. But you really will be driving the "back roads" here so forget renting a normal car !! I advise people to not rent a normal car as they will not take you down most of the island roads and even the main road is a bit rough in sections. Instead, I advise a larger SUV type vehicle that has more clearance and can handle the rougher roads. Rates for an SUV type vehicle, in good condition, will run anywhere from $75 to $90 per day depending mainly on how long you will be renting it for....the longer the rental the cheaper the vehicle. Believe me you will not regret spending the few extra dollars for an SUV.
There are a number of operators on the island depending on which airport you are landing. MAKE SURE YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHAT KIND OF VEHICLE YOU ARE RENTING…YOU REALLY NEED A GOOD SUV…SOMETHING LIKE A NISSAN XTRAIL OR A HONDA CRV OR LARGER. SO DOUBLE CHECK BEFORE YOU RENT !!! It is just past the Atlantic Fisheries sign on the left. Hours are 8 AM to 8 PM daily except Sunday when they are only open from 8 AM until 10 AM. Very good selection of just about everything you would need. If you are looking for something and can't find it, ASK ! they are more than helpful. They take credit cards !
Liquor: One possibility here north of the cottages and one to the south. About 1 mile south of the entrance to Stella Maris is a road on the east that goes to the Watering hole. (cash only) There is a sign on the main road. Nice selection here. In Salt Pond next to Hillside grocery is KC2 liquor store....good prices and selection....and right next to the grocery store !They take credit cards !

Beaches north of the Cottages:
**Deals Beach: About 1 mile NORTH past Simms, South Side. Another shallow bay but few rocks. Pull off the road and put down the towel!

***Newton Cay…secluded beach and Bay…… Located at the end of the road in the north. Take the main road all the way north until it ends. Walk across an old bridge and follow the path through the woods to the beach. Stay here and snorkel or Walk all the way down the beach to the end where you will see a path…take this path to the Ocean Beaches where there is more snorkeling and sea glass to be found.
***Poseidon’s Point: On the North side. Great snorkeling site. Located off first road north of Pratt’s Restaurant in Burnt Ground. Take road and when it forks go to the left and follow it to the beach road….drive right onto the beach.
***Stella Maris Area……..go along Ocean drive and you will find scattered beaches. Go all the way south toward the SSI development and you will find LOVE BEACH. They also have a nice beach bar there you might want to try.
***Millers Beach…great for beachcombing.. take the road south from our place and go past the Anglican Church on the left…keep going a little more and you will come into Millers…when you get to the ball field there will be a road on the left…take this road all the way to the top of the hill……go down the hill and take the FIRST left and go all the way to the end to Millers Beach….Secluded and Spectacular !
***Millers Bay…. South of the Cottage and Right across from Vindell’s Takeaway and at the end of the ballpark there is a road on the Right going to the south side…take this road to a very nice Leeward side Beach called Millers Bay…There is also a sign on this road that says CHEZ PIERRE.
****French Harbor..seclusion at this crescent beauty ! Go south from our place …once you pass Vindells’s on your left the next road will take you over to French Harbor (and other beaches too). Take a left where the white church is on the left and follow it all the way until it ends….worth the trip !

***Guana Cay: South of Salt Pond. Once you are out of Salt Pond it’s the first left…take it over to the beaches in Pinders. Nice beach and you can see Guana Cay…
Beaches Up south
There are some absolutely stunning beaches up south also. We’ll take them in order from North to South. These are all south of Mangrove Bush and Hamiltons.
***Turtle Cove and Dean’s Blue Hole…Past Hamiltons about a ½ mile or so south is a road leading to Turtle Cove and Dean’s Blue hole..There should be a sign there and there is also a phone booth on the right side of the road…go figure !…anyway..take a left and go down towards the beach..if you continue straight you will come to Turtle Cove….But take the road to the right and go to Dean’s Blue Hole….Beautiful Beach here !

****Gordons….. Directions to this beach is easy: Take Queens highway all the way South until it ends….take a right and go to the beach…That’s it !..A beautiful beach..again !
SNORKELING:
We have a small reef in front of the house just 180’ from our beach that has hundreds of fish there of all colors. This might be some of the best snorkeling on the island.

Local Seafood
Let us know if you want to buy some local seafood to cook at home. We can contact local fishermen who can supply locally caught fish, conch and lobster. You’ll never get it fresher unless you catch it yourself ! Also you can go to Constantakis Seafood about 10 minutes south of Deadmans Cay airport road OR check with the gas station in Salt Pond also as they can point you in the right direction to the seafood place there.
FISHING
People do FIVE types of fishing on this island:
**We can put you in touch with guides who will take you out to some spots to bottom fish or spearfish. These are usually smaller 17’ boats and they can take two people comfortably. They supply tackle and bait and normally charge $395 per day and up. A really nice experience being with an island pro in his environment……you’ll talk about this for a LOOOOONG time to come.
***Fishing off rocks or beach anywhere….all ya need is a pole and some bait. If you want to do this, Bring a stout spinning rod (two piece 6 foot rod will be easy to bring), some weights and hooks and any other tackle you think you might need. There is a store on the island where you can buy weights and hooks and other items but the fishing poles they sell are very pricey. We don’t advise going off the rocks as this is very dangerous if you fall !

St. Mary’s Anglican Church….in the Bight is said to be the oldest church in the Bahamas. The Spaniards built it in the 1600’s !
Hamilton’s Cartwright’s Cave…….Located in Hamiltons it is very spacious inside with lots of passages and the ceiling is over 10’ high. See where the early natives went to pass the time when hurricanes would scrape the island. Cave tours available.
St. Paul Anglican Church…built by Fr. Jerome Hawes and is in Clarence Town
St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church also in Clarence Town and also built by Fr. Jerome Hawes…really a neat old church and you can climb up into the towers and take a gander from the top…..awesome view !!!
Slave Canal … located in Clarence Town. The slaves who were brought by the Loyalists built it….by hand !!!! The purpose of it was to allow water from the ocean to flow into the ponds to make salt. It brings back Long Island’s history and heritage.
Dunmore Plantation… Situated on a hill overlooking the sea on three sides. There remain 6 Gateposts and a house with two fireplaces and drawings of ships in the wall.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED ARE ECO TOURS:
You can’t say you have experienced the REAL BAHAMAS until you have been out on the water !
I highly advise going on an “eco tour” off of the waters of Deadmans Cay, into the Long Island outback, through “The Snakes” and out to Sandy Cay. We recommend either Loxley Cartwright or his Nephew, Marvin Cartwright, for this trip.
Contact Locksley at: 242-551-2171 or we can contact him
Contact Marvin at: 242-472-8090. https://bigvadventures.com/location
Go onto You Tube and search Long Island Bahamas and you will find lots of videos showing the island !
Finally, if you have ANY questions just contact us and we’ll do our best to fill in the blanks. I think you will love the island, the people and the many sights up and down. If you are looking for a relaxing vacation you’ll find it here on Long Island !
All the best !
